HomeAid America "Unselfie" Campaign

It’s always exciting when a plan comes together, particularly for a great cause!

This year, Kovach Marketing had the privilege and opportunity to design and implement the “Unselfie to Help End Homelessness” campaign for HomeAid America, sponsored by Wells Fargo. HomeAid is the charity of the building industry and one of the nation's leading non-profit organizations building new lives for America’s homeless families and individuals through housing and community outreach. We are happy to be HomeAid America’s marketing partner, and proud of our involvement over the last 25+ years.

Unveiled at PCBC in San Diego June 24th, the campaign allowed visitors to stop by the booth to take an “unselfie” with their pledge to help end homelessness and learn more about HomeAid America. Participants were then encouraged to share their photo through social media to spread awareness of the organization.

The campaign created activity at the event and served as a draw for the HomeAid booth, as well as augmenting the organization’s social media efforts. The HomeAid America Facebook page garnered approximately 75 percent more page likes during the UnSelfie Campaign then it would usually get in a similar timeframe. Post reach saw an 869 percent increase during the campaign and immediately after, and post likes went up by nearly 500 percent.

A Twitter party planned in house and hosted in part by our social media coordinator ran simultaneously for one hour during the first day of PCBC. The Twitter party was an opportunity for those not present at PCBC to experience some of the activity at the booth on the event floor, as well as to learn more about HomeAid America’s national fight against homelessness.

Overall, the campaign was a great success and a lot of fun. Local divisions of HomeAid across the country are considering adding the “Unselfie to Help End Homelessness” campaign to their event presence in the near future.

5 Things You Can Do to Help the Homeless this November (And Year-Round)

November is Homeless Awareness Month. As we gather round to give thanks for what we have this year, it’s important to remember those less fortunate.

According to HomeAid America, as many as 3.5 million Americans find themselves homeless each year, more than one million of them children. More than 300 thousand American children are homeless on any given night. More than half of the homeless population are families with children suffering from temporary homelessness caused by personal tragedy or calamity.

5 things you can do this season & year-round to help:

  1. Donate
  2. Beyond monetary donations to organizations, the gift of clothes you no longer need, extra household items, groceries, and toys goes a long way to helping these families weather the storm that is finding yourself homeless.

  3. Volunteer
  4. Volunteer your time or abilities to help deliver services needed or help build shelters. Additionally, you can put your hobbies to work by giving lessons to impart marketable skills such as cooking, repair work, gardening, sewing, and photography. Consider making use of resources available to you, like expertise or equipment, to aid in shelter construction.

  5. Be Prepared
  6. Carrying snacks with you, packing an extra lunch, or keeping an old coat or spare blanket in your trunk for the homeless you meet can help ensure survival on the streets. Take it a step further and carry pre-packed care packages in your car to give to those in need.

  7. Advocate
  8. Educate yourself and those around you on the realities of homelessness in your area and join the movement by sharing socially, participating in events, signing up as a volunteer or organization member, or becoming a mentor to homeless youth.

  9. Be Kind
  10. It may seem like the simplest thing in the world, but just being kind to people around you and acknowledging the less fortunate in your path goes a long way to making the world a better, happier place. Show your fellow man that you respect them and appreciate their hardship by not ignoring those you meet who are in need.

Kovach Marketing's Expertise Benefits Homeaid San Diego

Expanding our continued commitment to supporting charitable organizations, we have created a multifaceted communications program for HomeAid San Diego, which partners with the real estate industry and other nonprofits to build and renovate multi-unit housing for temporarily homeless individuals and families in San Diego County.

Each year, HomeAid San Diego hosts several community events to raise funds and awareness for its cause.

“Kovach's expertise in assisting nonprofit organizations helped make this year's events more successful than ever,” stated Alexis Parker, executive director of HomeAid San Diego. “In addition to exceeding our fundraising goals, their PR capabilities enabled us to spread the word about HomeAid and the important projects we build for the San Diego community. We are exceedingly grateful for Kovach's knowledge and generosity.”

Founded in 1989, HomeAid is the nation’s largest provider of housing for the temporarily homeless. Through the generosity of America’s builders, their trade partners, financial institutions and private and public donors, HomeAid has built more than 175 shelter facilities around the country, with an additional 52 projects in development. These projects total nearly 1,000,000 square feet of space representing more than $130 million in project construction costs, of which $77.4 million has been donated by the building industry. To date, more than 100,000 people have received shelter and services in HomeAid-built facilities.
